Sandstone is a coarse – grained sedimentary rock mainly consisting of silica, calcium carbonate, quartz, feldspar and iron oxide. Sandstone is a clastic sedimentary rock with sand mineral with particle size of 0.0625 mm to 2 mm. The colour tone of sandstone rock is determined by the iron oxide resulting in Red, Pink, Brown colour shades whereas other materials resulting in White, Yellow or Grey colour shades of sandstone. This material has been used in the domestic building construction industry from the pre-historic times as a popular building material. One of the main reason of sandstone being used as a popular building construction material is the minerals present in it are having high resistance to the weathering process on the Earth’s surface. The major deposits of sandstone are in the North West and Central parts of India. Sandstone in compression to other natural stones like Marble or Granite is a soft natural stone and easy to work on by the stone masons and is available in various kinds of surface finishes and sizes.
